Alfred Klein
Alfred Klein – husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 78. A longtime resident of Kew Gardens Hills, Queens, he was known for his brilliant mind, gentle humor, and deep love for his family.
Born December 27, 1946, in the Gunzburg, Germany, Alfred came to the United States in 1949 aboard the USS General C.H. Muir, the son of Holocaust survivors building a new life in a new world.
He earned degrees in History and Education from LIU-Brooklyn and began his career in education before dedicating over 30 years to public service with New York City’s Human Resources Administration. He held leadership roles in adult and homeless services and retired as Deputy Director of Auxiliary Services in 2000. He also spent time in Israel after having made Aliyah with his wife and baby and earned a Social Work degree from Bar-Ilan University.
Alfred was endlessly curious and quietly hilarious — a true polymath with a passion for history, sports, art, an avid bridge player, and more. To his grandchildren, he was “Sabba,” and nothing brought him more joy than being present in their lives.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Klein; son, Darren Klein, and daughter-in-law, Heather; and grandchildren, Mitchell, Benjamin, and Eli. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Danielle. He is also survived by his sister Helene (Jack), nephew Adam (Galit), and niece Cara.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 23, at Gutterman’s in Woodbury, with burial at Wellwood Cemetery. Shiva will be observed at the home of Darren and Heather Klein, 10 Appletree Lane, Roslyn, NY 11576.
Alfred’s memory will be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
The family requests that in memory of Alfred Klein, donations be made to any one of his favorite Jewish causes or to cancer research organizations (such as Magen David Adom, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), ZAKA, Gastric Cancer Foundation, etc.).
